What is a Crab Rangoon Bagel?

A crab rangoon bagel is basically a toasted bagel with crab rangoon filling as the spread.

The spread has all the ingredients that a typical crab rangoon filling has plus the dipping sauce.

The main ingredients being crab, cream cheese, and sweet chili sauce.

It’s rich, creamy, and just a touch sweet.

However, instead of being wrapped inside a wonton wrapper and deep fried, it is smeared onto a bagel.

Bagels and cream cheese are an iconic duo so this crab rangoon bagel is the perfect fusion.

I had some leftover ingredients from when I made crab rangoon so this was a fun way to use them up!

The way I am preparing my crab rangoon bagel here, is in the style of a “chopped bagel”.

What is a Chopped Bagel?

So what is a chopped bagel you ask?

This is the most recent food trend to take social media by storm.

It is a spinoff of the viral chopped sandwich.

It’s still early 2024 and I feel like I’ve been seeing these everywhere for months.

Chopped bagels and sandwiches are exactly how it sounds.

All the ingredients, besides the bread, are chopped together until it becomes a uniform mixture.

Then it is sandwiched in between two slices of bread or bagel.

However, like everything that goes viral, it is quite controversial.

Some say it makes every bite the perfect bite while others say it is like “pre-chewed” food.

It actually reminds me a lot of schmears that you typically find in New York City bagel shops.

I love that I can get the flavors of each ingredient all in one bite.

So without further ado, I present to you – chopped bagel (crab rangoon version)!

Crab Rangoon Bagel Ingredients

Before you begin making a crab rangoon bagel, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • Bagel: My favorite kind of bagel is an everything bagel. It is typically covered in garlic, onion, sesame seeds, and poppy seeds. I am using Thomas’ bagels.
  • Cream Cheese: The main ingredient that makes this so creamy and irresistible. I like to use Philadelphia Cream Cheese.
  • Imitation Crab: Restaurants typically make crab rangoon with imitation crab which is made of fish.
    • Substitute: You can also use any kind of real fresh or canned crab that you like.
  • Garlic Powder: Adds a subtle garlic flavor and blends in seamlessly with the cream cheese.
    • Substitute: Use raw garlic for a more pungent garlic flavor.
  • Soy Sauce: Soy sauce adds saltiness and a savory umami flavor.
  • Green Onion: Green onions add a subtle onion flavor and freshness.
  • Sweet Chili Sauce: A sweet, spicy, and tangy sauce that is a typical condiment for crab rangoon.

Step 1: Toast Bagel

Begin by preparing the bagel.

Slice it in half horizontally so you have a top and bottom, both with holes in the center.

Then place both halves into a toaster, toaster oven, oven, or air fryer.

Toast at about 350°F for 3-5 minutes or until it golden and toasted to your liking.

Step 2: Make the Crab Rangoon Spread

While the bagel is toasting, make the crab rangoon spread.

Combine softened cream cheese, imitation crab, green onions, garlic powder, soy sauce, and sweet chili sauce.

Since chopped bagels and chopped sandwiches are having a viral moment, I wanted to try making this bagel like that.

I placed all of the above ingredients onto a cutting board and chopped it up.

Make sure to scoop and chop so all of the ingredients get evenly distributed.

You can also make the spread by chopping imitation crab and green onions individually.

Then combine it with the cream cheese, garlic powder, soy sauce, and sweet chili sauce in a mixing bowl.

Leftovers & Storage

This is a single serve recipe so you should not have any leftover.

However if you do, or if you decide to double the recipe or make more, you can store the crab rangoon spread in a sealed container.

It will be good in the fridge for about 3 to 4 days.

This is perfect for meal-prepping or just to have on hand for a quick snack or breakfast bagel.

However, only toast the bagel itself upon eating.

Do not toast bagels ahead of time because it will lose it’s crunch and dry out.
