The Best French Toast

This classic French Toast recipe is the perfect thing to make for breakfast or brunch! It’s slightly crispy on the outside while custardy on the inside.

The Thicker the Better

French Toast is my favorite breakfast and/or brunch carb! I love the extra creamy and custard-y flavor it has that pancakes and waffles just lack. I also love it when the slices are thick, I’m talking at least an inch or thicker! It gives it extra space to soak up all the delicious custard.

The Perfect Bread for French Toast

The most important part is to start with the right kind of bread. Challah and brioche are my favorite types to use. However, these can be a bit harder to find. If your grocery store doesn’t have those, French bread would be the next best option. Always opt to buy it as a loaf so you can cut it as thick as you want! All three of these pieces of bread hold up great even after soaking in the egg mixture.

This is important because you don’t want to end up with floppy and soggy French Toast. However, if you are really craving it but only have sandwich bread, you can still use this recipe. Just beware that the texture won’t be ideal.

Prepare the Custard Egg Mixture

After you have gotten the bread, it’s time for the next most important part: preparing the custard. In a bowl or container, mix together eggs, cinnamon powder, sugar, vanilla extract, and milk. You can use whatever kind of milk you want.

Just note that the higher fat content milks will result in creamier, more indulgent custard. I typically use almond milk, which isn’t very high in fat but it still turns out great! This recipe also uses a good amount of cinnamon because I love the strong cinnamon flavor. If that’s not something you’re into, I recommend reducing it by half. Remember, recipes are not the end all be all. Adjust to your liking because you will be the one eating it!

Cook & Enjoy

Once the custard egg mixture is prepared, dip the slices of bread in it. Make sure to cover every nook and cranny! Then place it on a heated pan with butter or oil on medium-high heat. Cook until golden brown on both sides. Lastly, finish it off with your favorite toppings, mine are fresh berries and maple syrup!
