Vietnamese Pizza

What is Vietnamese Pizza?

Vietnamese pizza or bánh tráng nướng, is a popular street food in Vietnam. It consists of rice paper as the “crust”, eggs as the “sauce”, and toppings such as ham, sausage, pork floss, green onions, chili oil, sriracha, or Japanese mayo. In Vietnam, you can find street vendors grilling rice paper over charcoal until crispy. Then you can choose from whatever toppings you like.

It is usually served folded and eaten on the go. It is a fun snack that is popular among the younger generation.

How to Make Vietnamese Pizza at Home

Most of us do not have a charcoal grill at home. However, you can still achieve a crispy rice paper crust on a pan and stove. Start with a pan on medium heat with no oil. Then add the rice paper to it, followed by an egg, chili oil, and desired toppings. Mix and spread the egg across the entire rice paper. This cooks very quickly so make sure to have all ingredients ready. The higher the heat and the longer you leave the pizza on the pan, the crispier it will get.

I also recommend not adding too many toppings as it will make it harder to crisp up. Eat soon after cooking to get the maximum crispy experience!

Toppings to Add

I think the best part about street food is that there are no rules. You just let your tastebuds guide you. Vietnamese pizza isn’t exactly a traditional dish so add whatever toppings you are craving or have on hand. My favorite combo is egg, chili oil, green onions, spam, pork floss, Japanese mayo, and sriracha.

Other topping ideas are Chinese sausage, hot dog, canned tuna, ground meat, quail egg, bacon, or cheese.
