What is Thai Seafood Sauce?

Thai seafood sauce is also known as nam jim seafood. It’s very aromatic, bright, tart and the perfect pairing for seafood! Whole Foods has $1 oysters every Friday. The special price applies to all oyster varieties and you can either purchase them whole or shucked. I bought a dozen and had to make this sauce to top them off! This Thai seafood sauce it is also great with non-seafood things. I love dipping chicken and veggies in this. The flavors are garlicky, spicy, sour, umami, and just slightly sweet. This dipping sauce is super easy to make and hard to mess up. Just taste as you go and adjust it to your liking!

Ingredients Needed

I would say the main three star ingredients are fish sauce, lime juice, and Thai chili peppers. Aromatics such as garlic, ginger, cilantro, and green onions give it an extra burst of fresh flavor. Additionally, sugar helps to balance it all out. Ideally palm sugar is best for this sauce but it is not always accessible. However, white sugar works well as a substitute. If you are unable to get Thai chili peppers, Fresno, serrano, or jalapeño peppers also works great to add heat to the sauce. The measurements below are just a suggestion. Add a little of each ingredient at a time, taste test as you go, and adjust the amount of each to your liking! If it is too strong or concentrated, add water to dilute as needed.

How to Mix Thai Seafood Sauce

It is best to mix this sauce with a mortar and pestle. First pound the dry ingredients into a paste. Pounding everything together helps to release the flavors more and meld them all together. If you don’t have a mortar and pestle, you can also use a food processor or mince by hand. Next, add in the liquid fish sauce and lime juice. Lastly, mix everything together and enjoy! Store in a sealed container in the fridge. It usually keeps well for a few days.
