Wonton Soup – Quick, Easy, & Satisfying Recipe
Wonton soup is super comforting and satisfying. I crave soup with every meal and this is a simplified but delicious version that only takes a few minutes to throw together for busy days or when I’m not in the mood to do too much in the kitchen.
What is Wonton Soup?
Wonton soup is a popular Chinese soup. The star ingredient is of course wontons. Wontons are a type of dumpling that can have various fillings. Some common fillings include pork, shrimp, veggies, or a combination. The wrapper on wontons are square and tend to be thinner than other types of dumplings. You can fold wontons into different shapes. The broth in wonton soup is typically clear, light, and comforting. The recipe I’m sharing here is by no means an authentic one. Rather just a simple recipe that you can make in a few minutes for a quick meal or side soup at home! It’s satisfying but requires little effort for busy days or when I’m not in the mood to do too much in the kitchen.
Shortcut for Making Wonton Soup
The key to making this a quick meal is frozen wontons. I always some kind of dumplings in my freezer at all times for fast and easy meals. In a pinch, I would use any type of dumplings, not just limited to wontons. It technically would not be a wonton soup but satisfying nonetheless. My favorite brand for frozen dumplings and wontons is Bibigo. You can find this brand at Walmart, Costco, and Asian grocery stores like H Mart and 99 Ranch Market.
For this shortcut recipe, you only need only a few ingredients. The wontons I used are Bibigo’s Chicken & Cilantro Mini Wontons which is a Costco specific product. These are fully cooked so it only takes a few minutes to warm up. Of course, you can use any type of wontons or dumplings you’d like. For the base of the broth, I like to use equal parts chicken broth and water so it has a little richness but still light. I also like to keep the seasonings simple with ginger, chicken bouillon, salt, and pepper. To finish it off, I top with sliced onions, green onions, and cilantro just before serving.

- 2 cups chicken broth
- 2 cups water
- 1 inch piece ginger
- 2 tsp chicken bouillon
- ¼ tsp salt
- 20 wontons
- ¼ onion, sliced
- 2 green onions, sliced
- handful of cilantro, chopped
- pinch of black pepper
- In a pot on medium heat, add chicken broth, water, ginger, chicken bouillon, and salt. Bring to a boil.
- Once boiling, add wontons. Cook for about 5 minutes until the wontons float to the top.
- Turn off the heat. Taste test and adjust to your preference.
- Right before serving, top with onions, green onions, cilantro, pepper, and enjoy!
